In most cases the electricity fails to help the propulsion once batteries have reached a certain level of cargo, leaving then that is the combustion engine which accounts for all of the force of propulsion. There hybrid vehicles in series or in parallel. The hybrids in series can move only with the electric motor or a combination of electricity and combustion engine. When we talk about a hybrid in parallel the strength of the electric motor is used only as an aid to the combustion engine, and may not the vehicle to get around only through electricity.
The use of systems of energy recovery as the already KERS -although much less dramatic- are common in hybrid models.
